What would Democrats do?
As noted below, Time magazine has already named Democrats the November winners. Former Wall Street Journal token liberal columnist Al Hunt did the same in a Bloomberg piece yesterday that got a lot of attention.
So I suppose the question we should be asking ourselves is, What would the Democrats do with the victory? Well, here's the official Six Point Plan:
1. Honest Leadership and Open Government.
2. Real Security.
3. Energy Independence.
4. Economic Prosperity & Educational Excellence.
5. A Healthcare System that Works for Everyone.
6. Retirement Security.
I offer these without a snicker, but do what you must.
That all sounds just fine, of course, but the devil's in the details. Take that first point. Sen. Reid, care to tell us who's put the secret hold on the bill to put government spending in a searchable database?
Or No. 5. What do you really mean by that? That line's description on the website reads, "We will join 36 other industrialized nations in making sure everyone has access to affordable health care." The Democrats have, I believe, proposed a single-payer health system. This bit of research is actually the first I've heard of it. Or the first time I've heard it put that way.
And if you doubt the objective, consider the bill that's headed for passage in California:
Assembly approves universal health careBeyond that, I went through Colorado Gov. Bill Owens' vetoes yesterday. He killed 44 bills this year passed by the Democratic Legislature. Lots of pro-labor stuff, healthcare expansion bills, a few nuggets for the plaintiffs' bar.
Passage of bill seen as election-year test for Schwarzenegger
Sacramento -- The Democratic-controlled Legislature is on the verge of sending Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a bill that would create a state-run universal health care system, testing him on an issue that voters rate as one of their top concerns in this election year.
On a largely party-line 43-30 vote, the Assembly approved a bill by state Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, that would eliminate private medical insurance plans and establish a statewide health insurance system that would provide coverage to all Californians. The state Senate has already approved the plan once and is expected this week to approve changes that the Assembly made to the bill.
But Senate Bill 111 is the one that really rankles, for me at least, longtime anti-PC crusader that I am. Here's what the Governor had to say about it:
I am filing with the Secretary of State Senate Bill 06-111, "Concerning a requirement of cultural competency for health-related professions, and, in connection therewith, making an appropriation." I vetoed this bill as of 11:38 a.m. today and this letter sets forth my reasons for doing so.So here's my take on the coming two years of Democratic governance: Health insurance and sensitivity training for everyone!
Senate Bill 111 would encourage all health-related degrees to include coursework in cultural awareness and competence, create a thirty-five person task force on cultural competence (incidentally the same size as the entire state senate) to make recommendations for course curricula, require the director of the Division of Registrations and all boards in health-related professions within the division to consider the task force's recommendations and determine the best way to implement these recommendations into licensure requirements. The bill would also require an annual report card on secondary institutions that would evaluate the status of cultural competency curricula.
This bill would require a complex new bureaucracy to address a "politically correct" issue which I do not believe merits these new requirements and expense.
Oh all right. And some real security if you just gotta have it.
Think I'll do a little trackbacking today: More on the secret hold at Hot Air and Just One Minute ... Betsy takes it up with Dr. Sowell ... I guess that's about it. America must be all politicked out.
